Winter Skincare in the Baltics: How to Protect Your Skin Barrier

From November to March, skin in the Baltics deals with a double challenge: freezing wind and low humidity outdoors, and dry central heating indoors. The result for many people is tightness, flaking, redness and a dull, tired look. The good news is that a few simple changes to your routine make a big difference.

What is the skin barrier?

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. It keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it's healthy, skin feels comfortable and looks smooth. When it's damaged — often by cold, dry air or over-exfoliation — moisture escapes more easily, and skin can feel tight, rough or easily irritated.

Korean skincare puts a lot of focus on barrier care, using ingredients like ceramides, panthenol, centella and hyaluronic acid to keep skin calm and hydrated.

A simple winter routine

1. Cleanse gently

Switch to a low-foam, gentle cleanser and use lukewarm (not hot) water. Harsh cleansers strip the oils your skin needs in winter. Try Round Lab Soybean Panthenol Cleanser or Dr. Althea Amino Acid Gentle Bubble Cleanser.

2. Layer your hydration

Instead of one heavy product, Korean routines layer light, watery hydration. Apply a hydrating toner — Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner or Round Lab Birch Moisturizing Toner — and pat in a second layer on very dry days.

3. Add a barrier serum

A serum with ceramides or probiotics helps reinforce skin that's feeling the cold. Good options are Biodance Hydro Cera-nol Serum, Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence and Dr. Althea 345 Relief Serum.

4. Upgrade your moisturiser

Winter is the time for a richer cream. Panthenol creams are especially comforting: Round Lab Soybean Panthenol Cream and Purito Seoul Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream are both excellent. For redness-prone skin, try Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream.

5. Seal it overnight

Two or three nights a week, finish with a sleeping mask to lock in moisture while you sleep, such as Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Sleeping Pack or Medi-Peel Collagen Super10 Sleeping Cream.

6. Don't skip sunscreen

Winter sun is weaker, but UV still reaches your skin — and snow reflects it. A moisturising sunscreen like Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream SPF50+ protects and hydrates in one step.

Extra winter tips

  • Exfoliate less. Cut back on acids and scrubs while your skin is stressed — once a week is plenty.
  • Don't forget your hands. Keep a hand cream in your bag; the Esfolio hand creams are a customer favourite.
  • Add a humidifier. Even a small one in your bedroom helps counter dry indoor heating.
  • Use a weekly mask. A hydrating sheet mask is a quick reset after a cold, windy day.

With a gentle cleanser, layered hydration and a good barrier cream, your skin can stay comfortable and glowing all winter long.
